I've been told that one of the reasons for seeing the headmaster is if your child is borderline which appears to apply to us.

Lots of rumours about who sees headmaster. Certainly if in line for significant scholarship I think, but can still get lesser ones without seeing him. 2 years ago the interviews with senior management were headmaster/chaplain/head of history when we went. To some extent I think it just has to be shared out to get them through the numbers.
