Was just wondering if parents need to make an application for a scholarship or are they purely awarded on merit regardless of means?

Depending on how well children have performed at the entrance exam, children are then invited for interview or a further test depending upon the schools selection criteria. These are awarded regardless/independent of income of parents. Assisted places are awarded based on merit and parents income. Good luck.

So is it possible for child to get a scholarship award without the parents actually applying or requestng one or could it be that a child performs very well in a test and witout parents being informed of performance has an interview based on this and the parents only find out when offer is made?

In my experience it depends on the school.

Some ask those who've performed best in the initial exams back to sit scholarship exams, others simply award to those who've done the best in the entrance exam and some ask you to apply for a particular scholarship (art/music/drama/academic) when you enter your child for the exam. One school's entry form had a box to tick saying you'd still be interested in a place if your child didn't receive a scholarship.

The prospectus should make it clear which policy a particular school follows.

King Henry VIII clearly state in their letter that should a candidate do well enough, then they will invited back for a further examination in the subject they did best, either Maths or English. I don't know much about the music route as we are all tone deaf at home!

The details are laid out in the letter inviting DC for examination. You don't have to tick any boxes, in this case the school will let you know.

As pe some of us this year, if you have not received a letter about a week or so after the exam, then assume it is unlikely an award is being considered. These things happen quite quickly.
