Depends on the paper and the school. Some of the English papers are a lot harder than others and some schools have a huge amount of applicants and so their pass mark has to be higher. The big difference with state schools is that the private schools can interview as many students as they like so if they have a student who does really well on one paper and badly on the other they can bring them in to see what the problem is. The states can only allocate on total mark, they can't choose an ace English or Maths paper from a student with a weaker second paper. The past English papers vary greatly and that will really impact pass mark. DG
