Applying for a Bursary when elder child already receives one

Post by cyandburb »

My eldest DS already receives a substantial Bursary for which we are hugely grateful. It is now time to look at schools for my DD, we had always though she would go to the local Comprehensive but as the time to choose gets closer I am feeling massive guilt at not giving her the same chance as the eldest. I can now see first hand what my DS's school has to offer and the support he has been given and it doesn't correspond even remotely to what his old classmates in the state system are experiencing. Even worse all her outside of school friends (and these are the girls she socialises with) all go to the same school as my DS too  .

The question is how cheeky would it be to apply for a second Bursary? I feel it is to be honest but I am thinking that where education is concerned maybe I should try, after all it isn't her fault that we can't afford to send her to what would be a great school for her.

She is not as able or confident as her sibling but that said I think she could sit the exam and not let herself down.

Advice please, we are not in a Grammar area so that is not an option and the local comps are good but large and impersonal and she is quite shy.

Thank you.

I would say

1. If you don't ask you don't get. For them, 50% fees or whatever is better than no fees if they have a space, so why not?
and
2. If you want to send your DC there, and its flattering for them that you do (play on that.....?), then it is of course only natural that you need to ask for a bursary, and arguably each award should now be bigger, as you have to find fees, such as they are, for two children instead of one from the same means tested income.

Definitely ask. Good luck.

I don;t think the school would be at all surprised if you applied for another bursary - they will have other sibships receiving them.
