Prep school kids taking the 11+

Post by Petitpois »

Article in telegraph today says you risk Tristan or Molly being chucked out of prep if entered for 11+.

Risk is they have have to go to local comps.

Heads see threat to income from disloyal parents. Only matters if they fail though as if they pass and steal a free place from another more deserving child, presumably prep head or chief master can take a running jump.

Oh the plight of the middle classes. Heart breaking.

The number of traditional prep schools who take kids to year 8 has diminished - many only go to year 6 and are often quite proud of the kids who get into GS, listing them alongside the places at Indies.

I'd find it a bit odd if a child were to be asked to leave from a prep. If they are not successful at 11+, they stay on in their prep and the head is happy to keep receiving their school fees. If he chucks them out, how likely is he to find a replacement to plug up his budget hole for that lost pupil revenue in year 7 and 8? Loyal or not, it just does not make sense financially to the school. It feels like a journalist chasing after an attention grabbing headline...
It felt like I hit rock bottom; suddenly, there was knocking from beneath... (anon.)

We made it clear from day 1 in reception that the 11+ was our aim :? I think that about a third of both ds's year groups left and didn't continue to year 8 but several children joined both year groups for years 7 & 8 - a mix of boys who failed to get into their chosen school for year 7 and boys whose parents decided indie was the route for them and the indies here tend to start in yr 9. Certainly each year a couple of boys who didn't get their expected 11+ results stayed on.

The school were always proud of their 11+ results and the boys were suitably lauded at speech day along with the yr8 leavers. All leavers, wherever their destination, are listed on the leavers board hung in the school.
