5c/5b for the end of year 5

Post by Jyo-Mom »

My Son got 5c In English and 5b in Maths last year in Year 5.

I was wondering, what Scores would he predict in SATs?

And in a recent Mock SATs test he scored 97/100.

There is only level 5 in the test - any sub-levels are unofficial.

I do know a child that got full marks in Maths and Science tests. :D :D

I believe a level 5a for maths is 94/100.

Why do teachers mark work in levels when there is no sub level for the real sats?

It's because each level is so 'broad' they are trying to show progression - otherwise someone could be level 4 for two years!

So if dd was being marked 5b last year and recently marked the same that doesnt sound so good to me :( would you have expected a pupil to have moved at least one level since (roughly) this time last year? I dont really want to talk to teacher if I can help it as I have tried and she was not very helpful, I think she thinks i'm pushy ( she may be right )

It sounds OK to me as there is the level 5 ceiling on the tests - is your child getting extension work?

I think she does for maths, and she is often invited to take part in holiday classes outside school which we must fund ourselves. i.e creative writing, philosophy. But her class has lots of very bright children and I dont think she is seen as achieving higher than the others in top set. G&T list has never been mentiond or anything like that.

I only ask because the children are doing booster lessons for sats, but when I asked teacher she almost laughed me out of the room for wanting to know how to move her forward from b to a. We are not going to practice at home but I thought I could talk her through what she needed to be doing i.e check spelling, watch punctuation that sort of thing.

thanks for you advise as always

That is disappointing! I would be happy for any parent to want to help their child! Presumably I've told you about the past papers (and mark schemes) on:

http://www.emaths.co.uk/KS2SAT.htm

If you get marked papers back you can see how/why marks were lost.
