G and T in Nottinghamshire

Post by roll17 »

Hi

My DD is on the G and T list for Eng and Maths ( yr6) and has been since year 3.
As we live so close to the Lincolnshire border we have friends whose childern go to various after school classes run by Lincs for G and t children.
Does anyone know if a similar thing happens in Notts.

She has recently sat an assessment week and got 5a's and we have been told by the Teacher that they will struggle with her this year as the work is too easy for her and she is singled out from the rest of the class to take extra lessons either with a TA or on her own on a lap top. This doesn't seem right.

Any thoughts.

It is absolutely not right - I teach Y5 & Y6 and there are often even Y5 pupils who get 5As - they can always be challenged appropiately. It may be broader work, but sometimes KS3 work is included.
I can't believe she is asked to work on her own - I would talk to the teacher again.

The courses in Lincolnshire in the places close(ish) to the Nottinghamshire border of which I am aware are run by individual schools rather than "Lincolnshire". Priory Academy LSST run Master Classes - pupils sit tests for these near the end of Year 5 - they are open to all but only advertised, I think, in the primary schools listed in the Admissions policy. There were also language and other classes run by Robert Pattinson School in North Hykeham - no test required. The schools are generally using finances provided to "outreach" to the local community which is part of what they are supposed to do when they take on a Specialism or have certain specialist facilities. KSHS runs courses mainly for adults related to its specialisms. It is not necessary to be G&T to go on these courses, though obviously if there is a test, as there is for LSST (the only school/academy I know of which tests for such classes), the children who get on them are going to be able.

I totally agree with wonderwoman - being sent off to work on her own is hardly appropriate stretching for an able child.

I would not be that happy that the teacher has said that and it is not appropriate to be working alone. Could you speak to the head? Plus there should be a teacher and governor responsible for G&T children, have a chat with them. Many primary schools run joint workshops aimed at G&T so children from different schools get together for the day/afternoon in a particular subject area. That happens here and I think it is successful.
