Help me understand KS2 SATS

Post by berks_mum »

AFAIK,

They have exams in 2 subjects - Literacy and Numeracy ( I remember they also had science exam some years ago).

Numeracy :
1) Calculator paper
2) Non calculator paper
3) Mental Maths

Overall grade average of above 3 papers.

Literacy :
(this is very grey area for me)
1) Speaking and listening
2) Reading
3) Writing
4) SPAG

Overall grade average of above 4 ???

Questions :
1) What is mental maths paper like ? Do they have to write something somewhere ?
2) How are speaking and listening assessments ?
3) How is reading assessment ? Are they given something to read and then write answers to some questions (comprehension) or oral answers ?
4) With SPAG in place since last year what is assessed in writing ? An essay type of question ? Are the DCs marked for SPAG in the essay type of question ?

Please can someone enlighten me ?

No maths calculator paper any more, last year was the last time it was used. This time there will be two non calculator papers.

Mental maths is a recording played to the class, they have a answer sheet, to write the answers on, they get 5, 10 or 15 secs per question depending on difficulty.

Overall grade is based on the total, not an average of the three maths papers.

Literacy was a Spag test and a Reading test. Both recorded separately.
There is no writing task in the normal Spag paper, but the level 6 paper had a writing task but the emphasis on this is Spag.
Reading paper is a booklet with three? Separate pieces, linked by a common theme and an answer booklet with questions in.

Other sections (such as writing) are purely teacher assessed. (TA)
So they get a TA for maths, writing and reading. This is in addition to the tests.

I have no idea about speaking and listening.

There is a website with free papers on so you can see what they look like, I will try and find it. I wouldn't worry about doing loads of practice at home though, and also be careful about what papers school are going to use for practise as well.

Thanks Tinkers ! As always, you are so helpful.

So,
1) Overall Literacy SATS level is an addition of SPAG and reading Test ?
2) TA is separate from the overall grade ?

Thanks Guest55 !

The maths one is pretty clear -
Mental maths + 2 non calculator papers. Overall grade aggregation of the three.

Literacy,
Will the reports show an overall grade (SPAG and Reading aggregated) or separate SPAG and Reading grades ?

Separate Spag and reading.

The teacher assessed with be separate writing and reading.

Is the reading teacher assessed then? I thought the reading stuff was externally marked too? Oh it's very confusing. So I think maybe there isn't an overall literacy level now is there? Or is there? I would think the individual levels of the various bits are more informative than a cobbled together level though.

Last year my DD had separate levels for maths, reading and Spag from the external NC tests.

She also had TA levels for maths, reading and writing.

No sub levels given for either.
