Does anyone know if the Long English Questions follow any kind of pattern? My son like many boys is weak at English however some aspects of the English paper he is very good at eg Adverts, Leaflets-I've been through letter writing with him and he's improved on this. i just worry about playwriting and long story writing because when he has to write a susatined and flowing longer pieces h seems to lossse his ability to spell, finish words or punctiate. He knows all of the theory and in normal spelling and grammar tests he's brilliant-he just seems to have to go to pot with his neatness in longer writing pieces. I'm hoping for an advert, leaflet or diary just to make it easier on him but I know they had leaflet writing last year-any isea what may come up this year or is it really just random?

As far as I can tell, it is fairly random, although you are unlikely to get a story for the longer task. That genre normally appears as the shorter task in the form of a story opening/ending.

My eldest was in yr 6 last year and there was an intersting thread on the TES website where lots of primary teachers were trying to guess the format of the 2 written papers, given the wide range of suggestions, I would say there is no pattern to it!!

Just an update 3 years on! To give hope to all Mum's of son's he is doing fantastically well at English now and his work is being graded A* . Its silly to worry because their talents will come out eventually.
