Hey, great news, which shows your hunch was right all along! Our appeal case was also quite long and involved but we didn't feel rushed. Hopefully you'll have a better experience this time around.

I agree with HM's points. After all, if you win then the upheaval and uncertainty of changing schools will IMO be more than compensated for by the plus points you mention. And if you don't then at least your DC will be settled and you will know you have done all you can.

Thanks for letting us know your news and good luck with the new appeal! :)

I thought it may be beneficial to some people who may be considering appeal this year to update the end result of our appeal process last year.

In summary

1) Appealed in 2009 to get our son into MGS - failed
From recollection there was roughly 30 in appeal and approx best 5 got through - based on class size going up to 30.

2) Appealed to local government ombudsman - succeeded won fresh appeal
Went through appeals grounds with a fine tooth comb to establish case.
Considered using specialist - costs unattractive, didn't feel odds offered were very good.

3) Appealed to get into MGS - won
Hearing was delayed several weeks by school into start of new school - this put off a number of others who has won a fresh appeal
Concentrated on key points - panel were appreciably more attentive

4) Declined position as son changed his mind, post appeal, as he was stressed about moving school again.
This was a difficult position my son had set his heart on MGS and had pushed for appeal. There were several appreciable differences in travel time and subjects which made MGS a much better option, but we did not want to add further stress at this time.

5) Our son is settled at OPGS despite the extra travel. We had to have another mini battle with transport team after agreeing mixed transport to help cut his travel time we were allocated bus only which would have meant 10 hour days plus homework.

The support at OPGS has been excellent and our son is very happy.

We spoke to quite a lot of people who had tried and mostly failed appeals, some who could not face going through the process. It does feel a bit like a lottery at times. Thankfully our daughter got into her first choice grammar this year so we are spared going through this again.

This site has been an absolute god send when you need help or support and my thanks to all those who have helped especially Etienne.

Good luck to those that are looking to appeal.
