Can we have some advice please

Post by annie »

Our daughter has posted scores of 120 and 114 for her 11 plus.
Her school is non committal on there support as she was predicted to be 21st out of 30 as stated on the head teachers summary.
However she was actually 9th out of 30 the other 8 passed.
Extenuating circumstances during year 5 is indicative in the scores achieved during year 5 testing, therefore indicating her potential as 21 out of 30.
Since stabilising extenuating circumstances in year 6, testing has highlighted the impact these circumstances had.
The figures we have to date include
NFER Verbal reasoning yr5 115 yr6 136
NFER Reading test context yr 5 108 yr6 120
Year 5 optional SAT scores Writing 3B, Maths 3A.

Should we appeal?

To be honest, the case doesn't seem clear cut. What are your alternatives to grammar? Are there good comps/uppers available or not? Would your daughter be happier performing at the top of one of these?

Generally the advice seems to be 'you've nothing to lose by appealing', but I think it is worth hesitating and thinking through. You could lose a lot of sleep for one thing! But of course your decision will also be influenced by the alternative schools available.

Dear Annie

With one score of 120 it's usually worth appealing if a Bucks grammar school is what you really want, but it can certainly be stressful, and, of course, there's no guarantee of success.

One would expect prolonged extenuating circumstances to impact on routine curriculum work. Was there a marked difference between the year 4 and the year 5 reports?

Were the KS1 SATs above average?
