my DD scored the following in kent test V133 NV 129 M 100. Clearly her maths let her down. The school have appealed for her but this was not successful. There were medical reasons for her scoring so low on math s paper(separate e mail) the school were not aware of this. I am going to undertake a parental appeal but one so called expert says i have a mountain to climb as maths score so low!!I live in the Kent area.Have looked on appeal section(very helpful :D )Does anyone one have any suggestions, more advice or whether to pursue this as maths score low?

Becs1, well done to your daughter on passing 2 of the papers.
Yes, an appeal with this low maths score is a mountain to climb but with the correct equipment it can be done.

You will need to get as much academic evidence of your daughter's ability in maths as you can - class work, reports, levels now, expected levels in sats etc.

You also appear to have the support of your head and that's always a bonus.

You mention a medical issue, again get as much supporting evidence as you can.

Dear becs1

Thank you for contacting the appeals box.

The extenuating circumstance is a valid argument, and certainly something you should bring to the panel's attention. The problem is it's difficult to prove now, but at least it's something they will be familiar with at appeal. It sounds as if you have some good evidence that a satisfactory score for Maths could reasonably have been expected.

I suggest (1) at least 40% of your written statement should focus on academic matters, (2) no more than 20% on extenuating circumstances, and (3) at least 40% on why this particular grammar school would be the best school for your daughter. Under (3), it would be very appropriate to link the hosting of foreign students with the school's specialism, and to provide evidence.

With regard to music, something like grade 4-5 might well add to the evidence of high ability, and fit under (1) above. If the school is noted for its music department and for extra-curricular music, it would also fit in nicely under (3).

I'm glad if the appeals section Q&As were helpful. Have a look too at the updates

starting 10th March.

Etienne thanks so much for your help, will be busy collecting evidence from next week!!As you say hard to prove extenuating circumstances but just plan to be open and honest with them think its the only thing i can do?? you say familiar with at appeal, thought DD would be in minority with this issue? Not that this matters. Thanks so much for your advice will keep you posted :D

In a minority, yes, but it happens, and most panels will have come across the problem. In fact, there's hardly anything that someone on the panel won't have encountered before!

You're right. If the evidence isn't there, all you can do is be open and honest, and hope they find you credible. (For what it's worth, from your description of the sequence of events, I believe you!)

Where you have been able to gather together evidence, attach all of it as separate appendices, clearly marked (e.g. "Appendix 1 - musical ability"). This will help the panel.

Good luck!

just an update...
Listed schools on scaf as follows

1. grammar school 2.grammar school 3.1st choice high school 4.2nd choice high school.

DD also auditioned for musical placement at 1st choice HS

Recieved letter to say had place at 1st choice high school on music abilities :D
I have today accepted the place, but just a few ?s
Is it worth appealing to both grammar schools?will each one know??
If at appeal they ask me if i have a place anywhere for DD shall i say yes?
DD has predicited level 5s in sats, reading and writing13+ also5s. Evidence now from school family liasion officer and doctors re medical evidence.
Still worried as 17 anyway from pass mark, and the further away the less likely to win!!!
Any advice much appreciated
