12+ appeal for Wycombe High School
Hi,
I wonder if anyone can help, I have a friend whose daughter applied for WHS in Bucks for girls, she passed the 12+ but has not been offerred a place, due to being just outside the catchment area, though she is lives in the central part of the town. She is very disheartened as there were apparently 10 places. On what grounds can she appeal as the other options would be Beaconsfield or Aylesbury, which are a fair distance away. she is hoping still for WHS. Please reply, also her close friend got a place, but was in the catchment area.

Note that, as of January 2011, WHS had the following numbers of pupils on their roll (compared to a PAN of 180):
Y7 - 170
Y8 - 191
Y9 - 185
Y10 - 183
Y11 - 180
The school does therefore regularly admit above PAN, and that is an argument that may be raised at Stage One of the appeal. Those figures (or very similar numbers) should be in the appeal pack. If there are only one or two appeals for the 12+, I would think the school might be struggling to make the case that they cannot admit over PAN for next year's Year 8, given that they have 11 additional pupils in the current Year 8!
We believe that Y7 this coming September will be full, but appeals have not yet taken place. They probably will have done by the time your friend's appeal takes place, so it is worth asking the question as to how many 11+ appeals were successful this year, and therefore whether Y7 will be oversubscribed.
Obviously your friend must prepare to make the strongest case she can at Stage Two of the appeal, but it might just prove to be unnecessary after Stage One if the school loses its case.
Your friend should also place her daughter on the waiting list - I am guessing that she will probably be in first place, and the 12+ pass is valid until the start of Y10, or until the school starts to teach KS4, which some schools do after Easter in Year 9.

You can certainly argue that WHS is the nearest grammar school - actual distances would be helpful. Clearly AHS and BHS will be significantly further away. The allocation distance for the 12+ this year was 2.33 miles. If your friend's daughter is literally a few yards beyond that (she can find out from Admissions what they state the distance to be - get it in writing), then a panel will almost certainly feel that it is pretty tough luck if the distance is literally a few yards.
