should i appeal? (Bucks)

My son got 112/120 should i appeal

Also is there a certain procedure to follow?

I khow its only 1 mark away but is there any hope that the appeal process will be succesfull.

The headteacher at the the school supports us very strongly and adviced us to appeal,

also my son is one off the older kids in the class,because off his age do they deduct marks from his test result?
does this go against us or for us in the appeal.

I also forgot to mention that we are in the the bucks area is this good or bad area for appeals?

No, scores are standardised by age, which means that younger children are given some allowance in their scores for their age. No child has marks deducted for age.

Appeals in Bucks are well run, and the chances of success by score are given in the appeals brochure that you have been given. Generally speaking, there is more chance of success at an appeal in Bucks than in many other areas - 30% of all children taking the test qualify outright, but a further 5% will qualify through an appeal.

I am not to sure on whats things i should say when i am there,Is there a certain style or procedure i should
be following or should i just be myself?Is there certain things i should say about myself and my son.

Things like should i praise my son or should i beg, which approach is going to be more favourable?

i have read through the guidelines but i am having trouble with the question that they are going to ask" why did he not reach the pass mark"

I dont know what to say as we dont have any excuse's nerves on the day or pressure off the whole thing i dont know whats the best answer for this question.

We have a good supporting letter from the school saying he is top 3 in the whole year,his work is always 90% plus in every subject they have predicted 5's for his SAT's .

i do know that he was worried about not passing.

The yellow booklet says on page 10 "Please do not send in samples of schoolwork as this will not be distributed in advance".

If you read the Q&As, our advice is to take along exercise books to the hearing - if the work is of a good standard.

The only possible answer if there are no extenuating circumstances is to say so! Panel members might give some credit for honesty! You could add "but he was worried about not passing". The academic evidence is what matters, because if it's strong enough, the panel might well take the view that 120 is a better reflection of his ability than 112. If so, you have only 1 mark to explain, and anxiety about the test might be enough!

We had the appeal hearing today,Which was a bit nerve racking but on the whole thought it went ok,
the 2 lay persons and non lay person seemed to be interested in the case the clerk was very nice,but there
was another person at the appeal(cant remember his role now) but he was very negative and quite rude and at one stage was saying that they cant offer my son a place.I remember at one stage the lay persons looked at him and told to be quiet.

I know that this person has no right in the decision but was trying very hard to influence the panel i dont understand why or what he had to gain by behaving the way he did.

The appeal was going ok until he got involved,So i am not too sure now and have to fear the worst.

Sounds like the LA Representative (presenting officer).

I know that this person has no right in the decision but was trying very hard to influence the panel i dont understand why or what he had to gain by behaving the way he did.

With a score below 121, it's his job to tell the panel that Admissions think an Upper School place would be more appropriate - just as it's your job to tell the panel why your son should have a grammar school place!

Reports on here suggest that most LA Representatives are very reasonable. Panels tend not to like it if they're too forceful! Who knows? - he may have done you a favour!

Don't worry - if you were to lose your appeal, it's unlikely to be because of this. Having listened to both sides, the panel will make their own minds up.
