Advice needed for making an appeal

Post by Desperate_Parents »

Hello fellow forum members,

I have just come across this site and am surprised with all the information there is. I am gutted I did not find this website before :(

Our daughter is in year 6 and we have applied for grammar schools in Bucks and also in Slough Consortium. For the Bucks exams she got 122 in VR and for Slough Consortium she got 109 (NVR 113 & VR 105).

We are going to appeal on "non qualification" grounds for the Slough Consortium and would be very grateful for any advice/information that would assist in this process. I am aware that it could be a lenghty process and also very stressful but for the sake of a better education and future for our daughter we can cope with the stress :D

The head teacher will support us with the appeal and so will the class teacher.

Thanking you all in advance!

Welcome to the forum.

A first step os to read the Q&As - you need to collect evidence of academic strengths e.g. predicted KS2 levels, any CATs scores or other tests.

Your DC has a qualifying score for Bucks - are you thinking you won't get a place or do you prefer Slough schools?

Hello Guess55

Thank you for your reply. We have been reading the Q&A and will be getting as much evidence as possible of academic strengths.

Our DC has a qualifying score for Bucks but do not think it will be high enough to secure a place. It may be that we appeal to both?

faitaccompli is absolutely right - 121 is the flat qualifying mark for Bucks. I suggest you re-read the letter from Bucks CC!

All that matters now is how far away from your preferred school you are. You can view the past allocation distances here: http://www.elevenplusexams.co.uk/school ... n-profiles" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

I should add that if you are happy with your preferred Bucks GS, I wouldn't bother with the Slough appeal - they are notoriously tough to win.

Thank you for your responses. If we do get Bucks then we will not bother with the Slough appeal.

Prepared our appeal statement and sent along with letter from Head Teacher and also a letetr from Class Teacher. Hopefully daughter will get a place in Bucks. Appeal has been set for 26th April. Not sure what to expect at the appeal and what I need to prepare. If anyone has been to an apepal at Herschel Grammar School than any advice will be greatly appreciated.
Thank you.

I have got to attend an appeal on Thursday for my daughter's grammar school appeal. Any last minute advice or information will be greatly appreciated.
I have prepared a small (2 minute) presentation and will be taking copies of various documents. She failed by 2 points in the Slough Grammar Consortium. SHe has been offered a place at Burnham Grammar School but prefers Herschel Grammar School as it offers extra curriculum activities in which she has a great interest.
So, fingers crossed for the appeal and hope they do not give me a hard time

Hi Desp Dad

Sorry I missed this thread

As Sally-Anne said. consortium appeals are rarely successful. With Hershel now having a distance criteria (for a percentage of the intake) there are less places for applicants further away from the school.
The main points are not only should your child have achieved the qualifying score (many children would have achieved 111 and not had an offer) but that they were expected to achieve well in excess of the score and therefore received an offer.
If you have evidence relating to this then it should be highlighted.
If the strengths of the school mirror the strengths of your child then that gain should be mentioned along with why your child would benefit from what the school offers that it different to other schools (taking care not to criticise any other school)
The school is strong on the STEM subjects see the quoye on the school website...

As a specialist Technology College we work hard to promote careers related to Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics. This involves pupils of all ages in extra-curricular events that are linked to STEM activities.

Would this help your case? Your daughter seems to be stronger in these elements of the 11+

Good luck :)
