East Kent School Appeals

Post by moonsa »

Hi, so glad I found this site. So much good information. We will be appealing soon (deep breath!)

My sons scores were 360 in total. VR - 122/ NVR - 115/ Maths - 115

He came out of test so confident and he was so shocked when he didnt pass, one of things he didnt do was go back and check his answers but he has learnt from that I am pleased to say. Not sure that is a reason for appealing though.

Any advice on what evidence to bring would be grateful, as all seem to be so different.

Thank you

Hi moonsa, welcome to the forum. There will be some more advice coming along soon no doubt but in the meantime have a read of the feedback and FAQ's at the top of the 11 PLUS APPEALS section. It's where I found the most help when going through the same a couple of years ago.

When you have any specific questions feel free to post and someone will try to give you some help.

Good luck! :D

Appeals are basically the same everywhere! :)

As Tracy suggests, start with the Q&As.

Hi Moonsa,

Hope you've had a chance to read through all the great advice on here. I'm afraid I'm no expert on appeals, this year will be our first experience of one (if we go ahead!) but I am in East Kent and hopefully know a little about the situation here at the moment.

The information I've received is that the pass mark has been raised this year due to the West Kent schools being so over-subscribed, a lot more competition for the super selectives etc, and the further east you go the G schools are becoming less over subscribed. I'm not sure how true this is for individual schools but the girls' school we are looking at will have a significant number of spaces to fill this year.

A little ray of hope for those of us in East Kent!

Good luck.

Hello
Its our first appeal too but we are in west kent, I sort of wish I had a girl and lived 15 miles further east!
I am whiling away the time reading loads of threads and all the information and counting the hours until Thursday, we do have a comp as a back up but I am now not confident that we will even get that so have been having awful thoughts about abandoning all socialist morals for the independent sector lol

I have managed to find all the old school reports, reading levels and have his HT and class teacher writing letters of support - fingers crossed it will all be enough. Have you managed to find any useful evidence? My HT was very helpful to us.

Good luck

PS dont want to give you additional anxiety and hopefully its just a typo but I dont think your scores are quite right??

Question - Help please - East Grammar School

Post by moonsa »

I am appealing for my DS for Dover Grammar School as he missed there test by 2 marks. Should I mention his scores from the Kent Test on the letter or just talk about their test.

Many Thanks in Advance.

A similar question here:

No easy answer, but I think it would probably be all right (a) if the Kent results were good, and (b) if Dover is your first preference.

Please keep to one thread. :)

In the 'East' there seem to be a fair few that get in on appeal with scores similar to your DS's but you will still need to evidence suitable general academic ability. If there are more appellants than the school have places you should also prepare for the over subscription side of an appeal, not just non qualification.

I don't think the 11+ scores are necessarily a negative for this school because they were not really too far off the pass mark. If you find out how many more correct answers he needed for both tests, and also the Dover one this may help to put the scores in to perspective too.

Pretty sure the school has no specialist status but if you can link in with any specific courses they do which aren't available anywhere else locally, and your DS has a special interest in (which of course you should evidence) that may help.

We appealed in Canterbury......bizarrely DD1 failed the maths paper in the Kent test, but passed it well in the Dover test. We used the score as aprt of our appeal.

I`m wondering if SLBS going superselective is going to have a knock on effect at Dover Boys

Good luck
