Tutored?

the child with a borderline IQ (whatever that may mean!) and lots of drive and determination

.... however some of the tutoring/ appeals stories on here indicate that it's the parents who need the drive and determination more than their children!

Very interesting thread - and although I mostly agree with Capers' ideas, everyone has worthwhile points of view!
In our case we think retrospectively that tutoring may have given our child enough of an edge to gain a place at the chosen school.
It certainly wouldn't have done any harm!
