Appeal advice

My DS was unsuccessful in 11+ (exceeded overall score, but 3 marks short in VR). Meeting HT next week to discuss and see if he would support appeal, but have a couple of questions ;
1. I understand that I would need to put the GS on my SCAF as first choice - is this correct?
2. Am I able to appeal at 2 schools? The reason for this is that if appeal at GS fails, may need to appeal for my preferred High School due to distance/over subsription
3. The GS I would want to appeal at is not my closest GS, so it is likely that I will also have the over subscription criteria to meet as well as 11+ - is this all done on same appeal?

Sorry that I have many questions, this is first time and I need as much advice as possible.

Hi Ashfordmum

Yes you need to put the GS on your SCAF as first choice this will automatically get rejected as you did not reach the required mark, and your second choice will then become your first choice or if you put more than one GS 1st and 2nd and a comp 3rd your first two will get rejected and your 3rd choice will become your 1st.

Yes you can appeal to 2 schools or more.

How many appeals were there for your preferred GS last year, did they go over PAN? You may well have oversub at your closest GS as well if you were to appeal to that. If you are talking about NKS as your closest GS they very rarely go over PAN. Yes over sub and non quali would all be dealt with at the one appeal.

What are your DS's current levels?

Did it go to HT appeal and if so what was the reason given for that not succeeding?

You will need to gather plenty of evidence that your DS had a blip on the day and that he is suitable for grammar. What were his scores, how well did he do on the other two tests?

Any more questions, please ask. Good luck.

Thank you Twinkles - I will update you on HT response and whether he appealed after our meeting this week.

DS achieved 131 in maths, 128 in NVR and 116 in VR, overall 375 ,was untutored so whatever happens here, we are extremely proud .We know that VR is his weaker area, but DS is working hard on this and has made extremely good progress recently which his teacher has commented on. Maths definitely DS strong point and a subject he loves - the GS we would be appealing to is HG which has maths specialism and I am attending a meeting this week which they are holding re appeals procedure so will be able to obtain info about their PAN and appeal success rate from last year.

I just wanted to get a feel for whether his results are close enough for an appeal, or if 3 points below in one area is a problem.

Hi ashfordmum. I too have local knowledge and may be able to help. My first thought is there are GS's locally to our area you won't have a problem at all getting in to...... However you will have preferences and it would be wise to explore all the options you can. It isn't all about achieving a 'GS' education and I would strongly advise you to go and see some school's you had previously not considered but which are in reasonable travel distance for DS.

Feel free to PM me if you want to discuss 'sensitive' details which may not be suitable for the forum :D
