Re: Kent appeal
Thankyou
She's not going to grammar, she got an offer from the oversubscribed church school in Canterbury.
She will do well wherever she goes, she's very bright.
I suspect Grandpa may send a few thunderbolt down later

Re: Kent appeal
You didn't let her down. If it's like the church school in TW she'll get just as good an education so there's no need to worry. But the idea of Kent appeal panel does worry me if I ever face one. My impression from cases on here is that they are just there for marginal fails only. All the rest can go hang. Remember Katel? Spectacular flunks on the day just do not seem to impress them. Of course there are going to be some very able children who flunk it on the day. Looking at just the marginals is silly - a lot of them could be those who did their very very best on the day but do not meet the standard.U400JB9 wrote:TBH I don't know, and I have this overwhelming feeling I let her down.
She deserves a grammar place, she's a level 6 in English and Maths now.
Heyho, onwards and upwards. She loves the school she was offereand I've often wondered if this particular grammar was too pressurized. Her sister thrives there, but she's not her sister.
I know her best friend will be thrilled as they're now going together.
Maybe the new CEM test will be better. Who knows?
Re: Kent appeal
I remember Katel well......same school I believe. I think his other Dd is in fact in the 6th form of the said school.
The reason they gave was her scores were too low on the day......despite academic evidence to the contrary and extenuating circumstances.
Can't change it now, and I never have to go through the Kent Test again

Re: Kent appeal
A silly panel. What have the scores on the day got to do with it? There's something on the site that cannot be mentioned about a bad panel at TWGSB a few years back; whatever school you are talking about seems to have a thoughtless one by the sounds of it.
If you can be bothered, I'd go further - it won't make any difference to you I am sure but you might do some others a favour.
Or is it Kent panel training that is poor?

Re: Kent appeal
What was worse, for me, is the school had places......and this school are not known for their compassion or pastoral care.
Its their loss, she'll be a high achiever wherever she is. I just hope there's enough 'pushing' at the school she's got, to really find her potential. Personally, she'll want to do better than her big sister.
TBH,even I thought it was worth taking it further, I don't have the energy. This is the end of a horrible 12 months, it's time to shut the door on it all and enjoy what we have.

Re: Kent appeal
Oh so sorry to hear your news U400JB9 . Big hugs for you.
You got your result super quick, didn't you?
As others have said the appeal panels do seem extra harsh in Kent and sometimes I wonder what evidence of grammar school suitability they are looking for.
I can really empathise with you in that you feel you have let her down - I felt the exact same 3 years ago when I had the same result for my son's appeal. You haven't let her down at all, you have done all you can to try and prove she had a bad day and is more than capable of coping at a grammar.
You are lucky that you have a great offer and, as you say, she will do well wherever she goes. I hope she isn't too disappointed.
I can fully understand that you just want to close the door on it all now, it is such a stressful and emotionally draining experience to go through, and you had to do it twice, I'm glad I only had to do it once and would never want to have to go through the whole sorry saga again.
Good luck with everything.

Re: Kent appeal
Have you looked at the up to date DfE tables for the church school to see what percentage of children entering with level 5s make expected progress in maths and english? It's very high at the church school I am thinking of in TW, and also for the middle and low achievers at KS2. Also, the school I am thinking of has a broader curriculum than the grammar schools - including some elements of the classics - so in a lot of ways it would be hard to choose between this and a grammar school if one had passed.
The new tables might set your mind at rest - but if they don't, just remember they are an average picture of all children mushed together, and your child is one individual who will be in the percentage that does really well. As you say, she has the motivation to try and keep up / outstrip her sister and this will be a motivating factor for a while until she is older and wishes to do her personal best without involving the friendly sisterly rivalry.
She'll be fine. I'm glad you've got the nice church school. You never know it might be better than the grammar!

Re: Kent appeal
Sorry for my mistake about your existing offer; I must've misread something. It seems lunacy that a school with places should not take a girl who is so obviously capable but, as you say, their loss. If the grammar is not known for its pastoral care (if I've understood that bit correctly?), then I would say probably a good thing your DD is not going there. Good pastoral care is essential.
You've done all you could and have nothing to reproach yourself for. It's just the 11+ (can you remind me I said that in 2 years' time!!). Church schools are often excellent in academic turns, with very good pastoral support. I am sure she will do very well in her GCSEs and A'levels with you to support her.

Seize the day ... before it seizes you.
Re: Kent appeal
Feel a bit sad reading the outcome of your appeal, not least because it has taken me back in time..... We were lucky and decided to take an alternative route, but the allocated school on reflection wasn't what we really wanted for DS. He too had to attend a different school to his siblings which was harder for me than him!!! You have at least a good alternative.
It does seem madness to me with such strong evidence and genuine reason for the 11+ score. Sadly some panel members do only consider borderline cases which I firmly would not. As others have said, a borderline miss may be the best one DC has to offer against a genuine reason for not performing on the day by a long mark and in reality they would have flew through.
You haven't let DD down, it sounds like she will be very happy with her new school and she will do well. Big hugs to you, not because it's sad but because you did all you could and it isn't your fault that the panel were not open to your explanation. x

Re: Kent appeal
Thankyou, after my initial disappointment I'm ok......DD2 on the other hand is delighted
Mystery, I did indeed take your advice and look at the new tables. It would seem in the high achieving groups at both the schools are remarkably similar. Which has reassured me alot.
I think DD2 is happy as she knows where she is going and the waiting is over.
So all is good. Thankyou all
