My son scored 117 this year. during his exam he got distracted by other student sitting behind him because other student was peeking his answer sheet. He raised this to the duty teacher and later on that student was caught by the duty teacher peeking my son's answer sheet.

He got +131 STS in year 5 progress report.
He was very good through out year 5 in NFER verbal and non verbal test.
He is 1 of the 5 student of whole year 5, went to represent his school for junior maths challenge.
He also got very good score in fake SET maths and English test in year 5.

should i go for selection review?

What kind of evidence I need to collect from his school (current school and previous school (Cardiff upto year 4))?

How do i compare his Maths STS (Yr 5 Progress Report) +131 is equivalent to level 4a or 5a etc ?

I really need help of some expert from this forum.

Thanks in advance.

I've split this off into its own thread so your questions don't get mixed up and lost.

What do you think are chances of being successful when requesting a Selection Review?

Sally-Anne, Etienne

Can you please advice on this please? I have not received any reply yet from anyone :-(

At our school the Head is very clear about the viability of a Selection Review, and clear about whether they offer their support or not.

In my opinion and observing friends' applications for a review, this is key.

What has your Head said?

I got appointment with my DD's headteacher tomorrow. What kind of question I should ask HT to include in his HT report and recommendation ?

just to add some more info regarding my DD GS STS

DD's
Standardised score are
Verbal 119.60
Maths 116.36
Non Verbal 111.44

Weighted score
Verbal 59.80 ( 50 %)
Maths 34.91 (30 %)
Non Verbal 22.29 (20 %)
======================
Total 117
========================

DD has a good academic record in school. As per the year 5 progress report STS for maths was +131 (Excellent - May be equivalent to L6 (not sure) and English Writing STS 93 (Expected level as per the Age).
Very good score in CAT's Verbal and non verbal - how ever I need to request the score from score
Good performance in fake SET paper in year 5 - again I need to request this score from school
DD Participated and 1 or the 5 student sent to represent school for Junior maths challenge competition

Perhaps it's because no one can say what your chances will be?

Have you not read the Q&As?
We might make an exception for a score of 120.9 :)
- but otherwise our position is clearly set out here:

    • We never advise one route rather than another on the forum, because there are no easy answers. We can only say “Whatever you do will be a bit of a gamble – just be aware of all the issues which no one else will be telling you about”.
If you want a very rough idea, you will have seen (?) the latest statistics here:

It can certainly help to have the full support of the primary school, but one has only to look at the inconsistencies in headteacher recommendations overall to understand why headteacher support may sometimes be discounted at review (or appeal).
What kind of question I should ask HT to include in his HT report and recommendation ?
See the Q&As.

OP has sent me a PM asking for comments on the case - I am happy to oblige so long as it is understood these are just opinions and not professional advice.

As Etienne says - it will be a gamble & no-one can predict how a review panel will see the case. I know children who received a "pass" at 117 and one child who went to review and appeal - but parents could not convince panel that DC was suitable for GS. DC is now happy in top stream of a BUCKS US but parents feel completely let down by the system.

Success will depend on a number of things - the strength of HT's support, what HT's recommendation was (1:1, 2:1 etc) and how many with that level of recommendation actually passed the 11+.

You will need to provide academic evidence from both the classroom (SATS, NC levels or whatever your school is using to measure achievement and expectations) and if you have CATS tests from previous years these should be included. Anecdotal evidence says panels are looking for Nationally standardised scores in excess of 130 (but again it is only hearsay)

You believe you have extenuating circumstances (disruption in the test) - has it been logged ? I think you can ask to see the log for your school. However my thoughts are that DC sat 2 papers so is this disruption enough to account for the failure to obtain 121. Sadly we can no longer get hold of the scores for each paper to see if one paper was a "pass" and the overall score bought down by the second paper.

My other thought about this case (& I don't want it to put you off but it is an opinion) - your DC did not score 121 on any of the elements of the test. Our DC failed to reach 121 on 2 of the elements of the test and the appeal panel (not review panel) - really wanted to explore this failure in depth at our hearing.

NVR seems to be the weakest element - did your DC sit the Highcrest Banding test ? and if so did they achieve a 121 in that ? - it is after all another Nationally standardised test & can be used as evidence of academic ability.

So my thoughts are - you always have a chance at Review and if successful it means you will get a GS place in March school allocations. Going for a review will not prevent a future appeal - it will make it slightly harder as you will have to pass F,C,O, prove academic ability and then why the school should go over PAN.

I hope the conversation with the HT helps you make the right decision for your DC. There are no guarantees - you just have to do your best.

This forum has many helpful people and lots and lots of information and advice - it can seem daunting but print it off and read it and then read it again until it all makes sense. Most of the answers you seek will be here somewhere but no-one can tell you whether you will be successful.

Good luck

invisible I don't think anyone can tell you what your chances are as there are too many variables all you can do is read through the review experiences form previous years and make a judgement call.

I am not sure why the Year 5 results are being reported as DDB and yet for predictions you have levels? Have you muddled those up?

If so then I would disagree with the B as you DD is on target to exceed expected levels in all areas and therefore should be predicted Ds or Cs.

Can you confirm the information you have posted?
