You mention a normal eye test, but there may be another test you should consider. If your child's eyes tire more quickly, and interpreting what is seen uses more brain power than is usual, this may affect comprehension. When my DD was diagnosed with dyslexia and dyspraxia the headteacher and ed psych suggested we get a "behavioural optometry" test, even though she also has normal vision according to standard optometry testing. Some think it is "alternative" but it is really looking not only at the eyes but also the brain and vision, and is widely valued by doctors and others treating people with brain injury. My DD was prescribed glasses which were instantly helpful with extended text reading, and had an amazing effect on her ability to read music. They also recommended exercises which we couldn't do, as the specialist is too far away for it to be practical. Look at http://babo.co.uk/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;.

The 11+ and SATS criteria for extra time are different, and differ again for GCSE, A Level and university adjustments. All this is tricky to explain to a 10/11 year old, let alone an appeal panel. Whether you are awarded adjustments or not, find evidence about what the child's need is, and why certain adjustments are recommended, and what affect not having those adjustments is likely to have on test performance and the reliability of the result.

You might also consider rest breaks as an adjustment - these might help and are more readily allowed for SATS. If allowed, it helps to make sure your child knows how they work and feels comfortable with the arrangement.

Lots of luck to both of you.

It's so difficult just waiting and now the SLT report is back so I can I think finally get him seen by the paediatricians
I will ask my GP for OT as well as another eye test referral to check for the tracking issues

Is it normal to feel physically sick at the whole idea of this...3 years in a row...3 children being 11plus tested and a one year break between eldest and number 2child....you'd think I'd be used to it

It is an emotional roller coaster. Some, of course, will have a great alternative at their doorstep and may be as cool as a cucumber! Personally, only yoga keeps me sane! Not long now!

Did you get anywhere with your child's diagnosis?

Hi Salsa...
It's just been a hugely protracted affair...I finally convinced my GP to refer my child back in Feb hoping for him to be seen before Sep and ideally get a diagnosis and more importantly the right support...but huge issues with the NHS...lost referral ...didnt get to the right dept....my surgery didnt inform me ...and the annoying thing is I chased it gently in Apr...then in June...to be told ' I had been referred'
Only to find out late July...that it had gone awry...
So have had to restart the whole process with an anticipated 6-12m waiting time to be seen!!
And this is after getting PALs involved

I'm sorry to hear it, but sadly I'm not surprised. Keep checking, maybe more often. Good luck.
