I posted about a week ago but I think I asked the wrong question. My dd passed the Wallington School in Sutton test at 352 and they offered to girls who got 331 and above who live in the catchment area. If she had reached 375 or above then she would have been offered a place (the top 50 girls). I want to appeal because there are no schools in my area who are as strong in maths. Is it worth appealing? She is 1.1 km outside the catchment area, but I dont know how an appeal can even stand a chance with her marks

I am sorry I can't help you but try posting it in your region as well as here as there may be someone who knows the school who can help

Dear Patty

I'm assuming this is a foundation school, and that what you are really interested in is the success rate for appeals.

I suggest you ring the school's Admissions Office in the first instance to see what they might be prepared to tell you on the phone. Ask how many appeals there were last year for year 7, how many succeeded and (if possible) the range of marks, and was this a typical year?

Good luck!

If they are not forthcoming, try writing to their Admissions Office, stating that this is a formal request for information under the Freedom of Information Act. Leave out the question about typical year, and ask instead for figures for the last three years.

Thank you for replying. I received a very polite letter with my appeal form telling me that they had 38 appeals last year and only 1 was sucsessful. Steep odds! It is just a shame that she passed so well and did not get a place. My dds favorite subject is maths and they are very strong on that subject. I suspect my dd did very well in the maths paper 'cause she did not finish the vr. Any ideas?

Any other grammars in the area with lower pass marks - worth appealing / applying for them. I know the Surrey County Council area ones were closed by the government in 1976 (mutter mutter mutter).

Or what about an out-of-area good secondary - Dorking / Leatherhead? It's a bit of a hike, but might be worth it - depends on your child's' talents/specialities - Ashcombe in Dorking is a Language & Music specialist & Thurfield(?) in Leatherhead used to be great for music (I played there many a time in my youth).

We live in the London Borough of Lambeth so it would be quite a trek for her. Thank you for the suggestions though. There is another local grammar but they are even more stringent on their criteria and music and stuff is just not our dds thing! We will appeal anyway. You never know...do you?
