Didn't see your last post when I started writing mine. The CAT scores are difficult to decipher without the percentile.

hi sam's mum thanks for your time,
i have letters from her teachers stating she is of grammar school, i have a recent school report where she got b+ and effort 1 for all subjects she is top 2 of her class but i don't have any evidence for this.

i haven't got the percentil rank - will the school have it?

our grounds of appeal are really just on academic ability she had no reason not to have done well on the day - just had a bad day!

Two of the scores look fine!

Code: Select all

Description St % pupils percentile score
Very high 9 4 97+ 127+
Above av. 8 7 90-96 119-126
Above av. 7 12 78-89 112-118
Average 6 17 59-77 104-111
Average 5 20 41-58 97-103
Average 4 17 23-40 89-96
Below av. 3 12 12-22 82-88
Below av. 2 7 5-11 74-81
Very low 1 4 4- 73-
Although grammar schools are said to select the top 25%, the 11+ is usually standardised specifically for those who sit the test, so the 75th percentile in national terms is almost certainly not high enough.

I think the best evidence would be standardised scores and SATs predictions (I assume these would come from the practice tests that are taken before the actual SATs) as these can be put into context and compared with the population as a whole. School reports can be a bit subjective (ours were useful as they showed DD's position within her year group). Have the school given you any SATs predictions, in letter of support perhaps?

The CAT tests are marked externally and the school should have a sheet from the outside agency with the results on - this gives a lot more information than just the score. I noticed that the lowest was NVR. I always think that this is the hardest one unless you are familiar with the techniques for solving them. Was her score on this paper better in the 11+? If so I would point this out.

thank you for that - i was struggling to find this on the internet!
so is that not good at all for the non vr? should i gloss over non vr and mention the other 2 or not mention any of them? do you think we don't stand a chance now?

thanks

What did your local 11+ tests consist of?

hi sam's - in the 11 + we did n't have a non vr paper!

and yes i have her sats scores in a letter of support!

the school we are appealing for is a science school and science was her highest score so im saying that s why she has to go to this school as this is where her ability is at it's highest!

If there is no NVR at 11+ you need not quote that score ... but do add the others!
