two answers for the same question?

Post by malkbk »

This has probably been mentioned before but my son just did question 50 in the compound words section of VR vol 1 cd.

His answer was STIR- RING and the answer given is BUR-ROWED.

They both seem correct to me.

Any one else spotted it?

Having re read the question MIke, it seems to me that it actually has three answers.

STIR-RING
FUR-ROWED
BUR-ROWED

I hope we don't have any like this in the exam!

Could we have a response from the question writer?
many thanks,
Barbara

Hi Barbara

Mike is the question writer for these CDs. There are always slight glitches in VR practice materials - my son found a couple recently.

The virtue of the e-papers and CDs is that they can be corrected instantly, whereas printed materials take time and money.

If you spot any more problems just send a PM to Forum Admin and he will correct them.

I don't think there has ever been an error in the real papers - they are trialled in advance, so any errors would come to light in that process.

Best wishes

Hi malkbk

In your request for comment from the author, I needed access the original question that you referred to, to check the answer options against the wordlist and dictionaries that we used to compile the questions. Compound Words actually cause us the most problems and most issues that have been raised have concerned Compound Words.

The original question:
(stir fur bur)
(rowed ring sing)
contains five possible correct answers

fur ring
stir ring
fur rowed
bur rowed
bur ring

Sometimes we try so hard to create ambiguity within the question that we end up confusing ourselves.

We have written a new question to replace the one above and it has been forwarded to elevenplusexams.co.uk. As this is question 50 on the Compound Words set, hopefully there will be no more fixes reqired for this set.

VR CD1 was actually launced twelve months ago this week and we are always taken aback when an error is spotted as we know there have been some very able children completing these questions. It may be that the error has been spotted but not reported to us.
