11+ DC Error

Post by KenR »

Has anyone else spotted the error in question 34 of the online sample CD test?

This is a letter/numerical substitution problem which substituton works out as :-

44 div 0 = 14 - x

The answer according to the test script is x = 0 which is of course rubbish.

44 div 0 is indeterminate (infinity)

A general question for the compilers - what should a child do if they find a simple icorrect question in the real exam? You have to put someting down as its multipe choice but strictly speaking those children who do not answer the question could be the only ones who are correct?

Dear Ken R

Agree with you re Q 34.

Re the real test, multiple choice, as the answer sheet is checked by an optical reader, someone, somewhere has input an answer for that question, even if it is incorrect, the reader will only accept that answer.

If the child puts no answer the 'reader' will award no marks, one would hope that someone, somewhere, looks at the statistics of all tests and would find out if a particular question was left out/incorrectly completed by a large percentage of children. It's certainly done for optional SATs, to show weaknesses, but would also show up errors.

Difficult call for the child, I would hope that ALL 'real' tests are proof read to the extreme.

Typing Error on input

Dear KenR,

Thank you for your eagle eye spot.

The question should have read:

0 ÷ 42 = 14 x (?)

which hopefully is not a mathematical impossibility. This has been amended accordingly.
