Results on 1st March

Does anyone know why the results for Warwickshire's 11+ are not known until allocation day on 1st March and many other areas seem to give results within a couple of weeks or so?

Is knowing the result in advance of filling out the CAF helpful or not? I have pondered this, and assume that knowing the result doesn't then mean you know if your DC has a place or not. As I see it knowing the result is helpful if you are in the top scorers (put the grammar on the CAF) or the bottom scorers (don't waste a choice on the CAF) but if you are in the middle you are no better off than not knowing!

I know from this website that you know your DC position eg 200/950, is just one overall result given or is there a result as well for each subject tested?

My last question is; is this position information automatic with the allocation on 1st March or do you have to specifically ask for it (I don't live in Warwickshire - will that make a difference)?

Hi Rose Petal

I take it you know just what a difference not living in Warwickshire is going to make as to whether your child gets a place or not? If not, post back and I or someone else will explain.

With regard to the notification - I have no idea why it takes 5 months. Other counties seem to tell parents and children far more quickly. A while ago another member was going to complain to the adjudicator about this, but I don't know if she ever did.l

My oldest son sat the 11+ two years ago, and we were outside Warks. I got two letters, one from WCC telling me his score and place in the listings, and one from NCC telling me which school he had been allocated. If NCC's website hadn't crashed on March 3 I would have been able to get his school this way, but presumably not his score.

Hope this helps.

Fed up,

Thanks for the reply.

Even though I don't live in Warwickshire I am in the South area priority circle, so as far as I am aware my application will be treated the same as anyone else in the Southern priority circle, unless you or anyone else know any different of course!

They haven't looked at the South area priority circle yet, have they? So I'm sure you're right.
Best of luck.

Answers below to the best of my knowledge based on last year - I could be wrong!

Last year you were given a position overall but not for each of the 3 subjects. However, you were given individual standardised scores for each subject.

My son was at Middle school in Worcestershire, so we had a letter on 1st March from Worcs LEA just stating his allocation and no other information. The next day a letter came from Warks containing the scores and position information. I also phoned Warks admissions to get individual raw scores for each subject, which they were happy to tell me over the phone. I suppose they might have been able to tell me a position in each subject but I didn't think to ask.

You are right. As long as you are within the 17 mile circle, your chances are exactly the same as everyone else . However, you may be lucky enough to be in the final year when that applies. I believe the priority circle is currently under review and the results expected to report in December. My second son may be unlucky enough to be in the first year when our village is excluded from the priority circle! We live about 7 miles from the centre so we are comfortably inside at the moment. I would be interested if anyone has any inside knowledge or speculation about what might happen with the Southern area catchment (WP - any ideas?)

sorry I can't help regarding the reasoning behind the endless agonising wait. I agree it would be better to know earlier. Magwich keeps promising to lead a revolution to overturn this legalised torture, but nothing seems to be coming of it!

I have spoken at some length to Nick Williams at the education authority who appears to know full well that Warwickshire should be letting parents know the results much sooner. He insists that noone else apart from myself has ever complained about the delay in releasing the results !??????
Even themost cursory reading of the School admissions code appears to suggest that parents should be informed of the results of admissions tests before filling in the preference form and para. 2.98 refers to Grammar schools directly.
It would make my life much easier if a few other people DID complain to Warwickshire as they do seem to realise they are in the wrong!
Also I get so miserable defending myself to the moderators on this forum that I do not really feel I want to stick my head above the papapet very often!!

The Admissions Code makes a distinction between things that are mandatory (must) and those that are recommended but can be omitted if there's a good reason (should). Publishing results before the CAF deadline is in the latter category, and in many cases it would introduce complications that outweigh any benefits.

If it is recommended by the code to release the results before the CAF and the authorities choose not to do so, surely they should at least justify the decision? There is no explanation on the web site as far as I have seen.

Please can you elaborate on this? Surely nobody would be worse off for knowing the scores and position early, and many people would be better off? If it is bad for us to know, why is it not bad in Gloucestershire and other areas where they do get the results early? I suspect that withholding the information has more to do with what is convenient for the authorities than what is best for us.

They should be ready to justify it if someone objects.

Primarily the early testing, which can come at the wrong time for children, and requires even further forward planning from parents. Separate times for registering for the test and the CAF gives you more that can go wrong, and you have to somehow handle children that missed the early test.

If you could make your points without personal abuse towards other posters, you'd get no trouble from the moderators.
