A couple of people have asked about how many places get turned down after they are offered, how much waiting lists move, and what the chances of success at appeal are. I don't have a lot of data on this (will see if I can get more), but a couple of snippets relating to 2011 admissions, taken from reports to the Warwickshire Schools Admission Forum.

As at 21st March 2011:
"There are some vacancies at Grammar Schools, King Edward VI has five places to offer as does Stratford Girls Grammar. It was stated that a large number of children who have refused places have gone to the Independent sector." (For 2011 both schools had a PAN of 75)

As 15th June 2011:
"Lawrence Sheriff Offers at 94, appeals heard 50 successful appeals 22 Currents offers stand at 116
King Edwards Offers at 75, appeals heard 35 successful 8 current offers stand at 83"

I know from last year (admission sept 12) nobody turned down their place at RHS so no one from waiting list got place. Only 2 children got in on appeal. A friend of mine out of catchment with a score of 325 (AQS was 311) didn't get place on appeal despite being exceptionally bright (no tutor) and they were pretty much told that appeal places were just not feasable unless exceptional as they simply didn't have the space.

This is the waiting list info for KES

2011 entry = Offers made to 26th boy on waiting list

2012 entry = Offers made to 16th boy on waiting list

And this is how the girls school scores translated into rankings last year

SGGS = lowest offer made on 1st March was on a score of 328.
This score was ranked as 179 out of 534 girls, and 330 out of 1064 total children within the south circle.

AGS = lowest offer made on 1st March was on a score of 324.
This score was ranked as 196 out of 534 girls, and 370 out of 1064 total children within the south circle.

Thanks - that's interesting.

Put a different way - assuming that the rankings may have been equal with others - in the Southern circle:
178 out of 534 girls (33.33%) scored 329 or above
151 out of 530 boys (28.49%) scored 329 or above

195 out of 534 girls (36.52%) scored 325 or above
174 out of 530 boys (32.83%) scored 325 or above

And 2012 was the year they had a section with questions on a ballet theme - any chance of a gender bias creeping in there somewhere?
