new 11+ mum help pls!

Post by mrsdaffy »

Hi all, I'm new to this site/forum, just starting our 11+ journey with DSno1. Can anyone advise me which publishers' study materials are best suited for preparation for the Warwickshire CEM exam please? 'tis a minefield of info and I don't know where to begin! Also any tutor recommendations Warwick/Solihull/Henley area would be great please. We have 1 tutor recommendation and assessment organised but limited places with her so no back up yet if DS doesn't get a place. Thank you to anyone who can help me.

Genuine recommendations by PM only (private message) are acceptable - but beware of the possibility that someone who appears to be offering a recommendation may have a vested interest! Please let us know if you think anyone is abusing the system by soliciting for business or 'spamming'.
It's easy to report a possible problem: just click on the red exclamation mark that appears with every post and PM: Image

Always treat recommendations from unknown persons with caution. However, there are many long standing members (check the date of joining and number of posts) who make a valuable contribution to the forum. If you receive a recommendation from one of them, it could be worth considering seriously (while still exercising a degree of caution).

If you receive a recommendation from anyone else, please exercise extreme caution!

Hello, we understand where you are as we went through a similar experience in 2009 and we took a tutor on board, someone who had a good pass rate with the 11 plus. Sometimes you do need to wait till the tutor has a space, we waited over a month. Our son was in year 4 at the time and we started in the April.

We used the Bond series of books for all subjects as recommended by the tutor and these had the desired affect, not only for the 11 plus but also for school work - a marked increase in both Maths and English.

Some say the bond books aren't much good but we found them to do the trick. Our son said that the NVR in the bond books was very similar to that of the 11 plus exam.

I hope the above helps?

Cheers

There are three elements to the Warwickshire 11+ - non verbal reasoning, verbal reasoning, and numerical reasoning.

Non-verbal reasoning you could use pretty well any publishers NVR practice materials for - but try to vary it by using material from as many different publishers/sources as possible so you see different formats.

Verbal Reasoning ISN'T what most publishers call verbal reasoning - it's nearer to what most call English. There's multiple choice comprehension, "cloze" tests which involve choosing the correct missing words in a paragraph and/or filling in the missing letters, other vocabulary based questions - practice antonyms, synonyms, homonyns and anything else which will increase vocabulary. Also sometimes questions like jumbled sentences with an extra word where you have to pick out the extra one (along the lines of "the moor plain on mainly falls rain the Spain in"). Maybe crossword style clues with answers with some of the letters supplied - jewelled cup = cha - - - e. Nobody really publishers papers which include all these and nothing else. CGP English comprehension papers/practice book are quite good for that element of it.

Numerical reasoning is another way of saying Maths - but there will be more long problem solving / working out what the sum should be worded questions, and data interpretation for graphs and tables than just being given sums to calculate as per some 11+ practice materials.

Also have a look on the past content and CEM preperation threads on the Birmingham section of the forum (Birmingham and Warwickshire exams are both set by the same organisation and have a lot of similarities).
