Advice (and tutor recommendations) for my year 4 boy - rugby

Hello, I am new to this forum. My son has just gone into year 4.

I still have mixed feelings about 11+, and tutoring in particular. However I'd like to start to think about it now so we have as many options as possible when we're in Year 5.

I don't think I can tutor him. We clash terribly and he is incredibly stubborn. It would ruin our relationship. :(

He's a bright, sparky boy who is more than capable but often slow to complete his work and very easily distracted.

He's a chatterbox and a fidget.

If I did use a tutor it would have to be the right kind, someone to inspire him and motivate him.

How does this work. Do I need to find one now to start in year 5? Or am I looking way too early?

Any recommendations?

I think it is a bit early, wait until at least easter to contact tutors, most will want to give your child an assessment then discuss results with you before accepting a child.

Hi Sierrabravo,

Nothing is too early. I started my DS's in year 4 and carried out 20 minutes everyday and built up gradually and got them through the 11 plus. Both are at LSS. Self tutoring is not difficult, its finding the time and being motivated to teach them.

Both my DS were fidgety, disruptive, and annoying. There will not be one parent on this Forum who won t tell you that every DS and DD who were taught at home had difficulties.

All I can say is good luck in whatever choice you make tutor or home tutoring.

Most my friends encouraged their little ones to read for an hour a night before bed, reading with them and doing a bit of maths. Prep doesn't have to be formal prep. Every little helps.
