AQS for Rugby High School

Hi - this is my first post, so really sorry if this is covered elsewhere, but we live in the Eastern Priority Area for Rugby Grammar Schools and I would really like some advice before getting the results Fri/Sat and before making any assumptions based on what my DD achieves to make sure I give her the right outcome.

The admissions criteria states (after eligibility under items 1 and 2), 3. 50% of remaining places will be allocated to children living in the Eastern Area of Warwickshire (of which we don't) who achieve the AQS or above, then 4. The residual 50% of places will be allocated to children in the priority circle 10 miles radius of the water tower (in which we do live) who achieve the AQS or above.

However, if for example the AQS is something like 205, is it correct that because we are in eligibility criteria 4, my DD could achieve above this, but still not be offered a place? Any advice on previous scores that have secured places for children who live in the priority circle (criteria 4) rather than the Eastern Area (criteria 3) would be welcome as I know the letter will give previous AQS as a guide, but my thinking is my DD would probably need to achieve something above this to be confident of a place??? :?

No that is not correct. If you achieve the qualifying score and you are in the second priority area (50% of the places are allocated to children living in the priority circle 10 miles around water tower) you will be given a place. IF however you live in the first priority area (east Warwickshire) in a part that is not within a 10 mile radius (not sure if there are any) of the Water Tower you may not get a place as you can therefore only opt for the first 50% of the places.
In other words the children who live in East Warks priority circle can opt for the first 50% of the paces (the highest scores) the children who live 10 mile radius of water tower can opt for the second 50% of the places (the lower scores). However most children (if not all) who live in East Warks priority circle also live within 10 mile radius of water tower so are in both priority circles so can therefore opt for 100% of the places (obviously minus the PP places)

thank you, that is really really helpful - so it's more of an optimistic picture than I thought as I thought she may need to well exceed any AQS which would be great, but some feat! :D fingers crossed DD scores enough for whatever the AQS will be then :)

Hi, was just reading the forum out of habit (you do at this time of year when you've had 3 kids go through!), didn't want you to be disappointed tomorrow but you will NOT be finding out the AQS until March, all you will get is the score and the ranking. The ranking for East Warks girls will give you some sort of clue, but unless you are in the top 60 and secure a definite place, it depends on the numbers, the standard and how many girls are bunched on the same mark. For example, the letter I received for my daughter last year told me her score was 203 and she came 124th in Eastern girls, we live in inner circle. With 120 places at rugby high and the 30 (mixed boy/girl) at Ashlawn you would have thought that was a good chance, but in March they put the AQS as 204 (and 208 ashlawn), this allows them to take the best of those out of catchment girls with much higher scores in the first wave if not enough inner/outer have a high enough score (there were 16 children on 203 so that would have maybe gone over PAM if lowered the score). The previous year however, there were 200 less taking the exam and the Maths was very hard, splitting the score much more. For inner circle they went about 3 points lower than the AQS. It didn't bother us too much as she really didn't like RHS and we chose an out of catchment school, but out of curiosity we did phone in August to see if she would have got a place and she was 18th on waiting list having gone up to 3rd from May. Hope this helps for tomorrow, and good luck (but the stress doesn't finish until March !!)

Hi

Does this mean that a rank 120 and below, for a child leaving in inner circle, is what can be taken as confidence to get a into RHS?

 pheww this is fairly complicated so my DD is only considered at eligibility 4 for the 50% of places (10 mile water tower radius, as we live just outside of the Eastern Warwickshire are  ) , does that mean that if her letter states she is ranked in the top 120 of eastern girls (regardless of what her score is as like you said it depends on numbers and how everyone else has done) then we might be more confident of a place at RHS????

I have no nails left, I am so worried for her so I definitely definitely need to understand how this works so I don't give her wrong impression. I may just have to congratulate her on all her effort and tell we won't really know until March....

Yes that's right, depends on lots of factors like scores of those in inner circle, how many choose ashlawn etc, .
Here would be some examples, your daughter is ranked 100th Eastern warks, 80 children in inner area get the qualifying score so they get the first 60 places, plus 20 of the remaining 60 places if their score was higher than yours, but your daughter would be very likely to get a place out of the remaining places. If your daughter was ranked 120th, but the standard was quite low and the AQS was high, lets say only 35 children in inner ring qualified OR a high number of girls in inner ring with very high scores choose Ashlawn, there would be more places for outer and inner ring combined for RHS so in theory even better chance of getting place UNLESS they put the AQS high and fill some of the places with out of catchment (as if they don't fill the 120 places as not enough inner/outer with AQS it goes to scores of everyone including out of catchment). It all very complicated (and I think quite unfair as personally I think they should give the places to the top 120 within 10 miles rugby) but I would tell your daughter, top 100 a very good chance, but not guaranteed, 100 - 130 in with a good chance, 130 - 140 very outside chance. Good luck

It's a lot simpler to explain than you think. In the eastern girls area there are 120 places at RHS (which they have to fill) plus 20 maybe at Ashlawn for girls. So for example, if your child has a ranking of 110 (+ say 8 the same) they are almost certain of gaining a place at RHS if they live in the priority area. Forget all this nonsense about kids trying to qualify for places outside of warwickshire it isn't going to happen, nor south warwickshire. In a nutshell if your child(girl) is ranked eastern circle around 120 , they stand a 99% chance of securing a place!

That's a very brave statement to make, and I wouldn't be so quick to disregard the risk of out of catchment applicants as "nonsense".

East Warwickshire do admit children from outside of the priority area. It may be different in South Warwickshire.

What is critical is the AQS and your score relative to the AQS. If you are in the priority area and your score is at or above the AQS you should be Ok. If you are below the AQS then you are on the waiting list along with the out of priority area applicants.
