Are music exams (ABRSM) only sat during certain times i.e. March, July, December or can they be as soon as a child is ready. DS will be more than ready to sit Grade 2 when he goes back to school in September so I wonder if he can sit in then. If not, is it possible to do two grades at the one time if a child is able?

Yes Tipsy, they are sat only at specific times of the year. Go to ABRSM's website and you can find out more:

Good Luck to DS!

Also, why do two grades at the same time? You can skip the lower grade and go straight for the upper grade.

I agree with the skipping although DS would be very unhappy that all of his G2 effort was in vain. It is, of course, not in vain but boys do prefer quantity over quality!

Can someone explain what this means please:

SV At least one month before chosen exam date, which must be outside Periods A, B & C
(28 days for UK online entries) - UK & Ire Any day(s) outside the dates for Periods A, B & C listed above
(excl. Sundays, Banks Holidays and Tue 28 July)

Tipsy, to all senior schools or organisations that matter, it is not the quantity of music grades that counts, rather, it is the 'quality' of the grade that they are looking at. A Grade 2 Distinction for example, stands out better than say, a Grade 4 Pass.

Look at ABRSM's exam entry form. They're all self explanatory. Dates of exams are divided into 'Periods'. See below:

You may have to save the above .pdf file first and open afterwards. For some reason, it won't open direct - not with me, anyway.

Thanks! I think I understand - they could arrange a special visit if there were enough pupils in a similar position otherwise he will need to wait until December. :)

Yes indeed. In DS's school, they come to administer the exams - obviously!
