Mike Leigh - Nuts In May

As I have been somewhat confined over the last few days, I have resorted to televisual entertainment and last night watched a recording we have of Mike Leigh's Nuts in May. He is more famous for Abigail's Party but this is a real treasure - we really laughed at it and showed it to the children today as well - they also couldn't stop laughing. If you are off to Dorset this summer, or if you are going camping, if your neighbours ever annoy you or if you just fancy a laugh, I do recommend it. It is old but the humour has really stood the test of time.

Resorted to the forum as it is all European athletics in this house and I cannot stand one more minute of lithe women in micro knickers doing triple jump.

Cannot agree more about Mike Leigh, Nuts in May is one of my all time favourites. Hope you are feeling a bit better and are washing down your anti biotics with a dry white.

Marigold

PS Have you seem High Hopes ? Fantastic.

tried to watch it, but Candice Marie and Nigel and their tedious dietary requirements, plus all the evil tent stuff, nearly killed me. Hate tents, hate carbo-watching. Love, though, in a masochistic way of course, Abigail's Party. Perhaps not enough ever to watch it again.
So, back to the girls in chafing micro knickers. Go Jessica Ennis!

But did you not see the best bit, when poor Ray has to sing with them? So understated, that poor man's performance. Classic. And it's Keith not Nigel, but it would be just as apt.

(Marigold - the cure is worse than the disease; these flipping antibiotics have got me begging for the dry white, or even the rough red; but I think my liver needs a break! Have not seen HH but will check it out after enjoying this one so much. Alison Steadman is surely a National Treasure by now, and made for the Jane Austen fussy aunt too.)

Keith!! Yes, sorry   all I had floating in my mind was Candice Marie's moony face, so the old corduroy trousered one slipped my mind. Keith, of course. I'll have it going through my head all day - at least it's displaced Kylie's Lucky Lucky Lucky which seemed to have set up shop in my mind.

As I lay on my sick bed last week, trying to get to the end of 'We need to talk about Kevin' without giving in to drug-fuelled sleep, I had the song from the film going through my head: 'I want to see the zoo, she said, I want to see the zoo..'. Kylie must be better than that, mustn't she?

Just found the zoo song on You Tube.... magnificent.

Have you read Getting it Right by Elizabeth Jane Howard? The is a couple in it who are just like Candice Marie and Keith, all home knitted mousaka and hairy legs.

(Glances down at legs before answering, and concludes I might just get away with not featuring in such a book just now): no, but will look for it. I might need some light relief after Kevin.

oh I enjoyed Kevin. Clearly "enjoyed" is to be redefined for the purpose of this post. What was poor about it was that he had NO redeeming qualities, but I thought she handled the "twists" well (admittedly, I'm a sucker who never sees anything coming and am ripe for author manipulation) and liked the idea of exploring a monstrous child who has no back-catalogue of reasons for why he did what he did (read it about 5 years ago so might have forgotten the finer points. If I can forget Keith's name within about 10 minutes, then there is a good chance that finer points are well lost).

Ah now, see, I am totally the opposite. About 3 chapters in, I am thinking, 'where is this husband now, then?' and then when the daughter is introduced I'm thinking, 'wonder what he does to her?' No redeeming features? Well, I think he was probably gorgeous-looking - there is a reference somewhere to 'dusty Armenian looks' or similar. A beautiful villain! It is a challenging book because it makes you look at your own parenting, I think. Don't you ever think you might have bred a monster - when they defy you or are cheeky or rude? How much is it the mother, how much the father, how much the genes? Fascinating and unresolved.

My kids have been humming the latest offering from Lady Ga Ga today. Now surely there can be no more irritating ditty to have going through the head than that piece of, well, music it is not - noise?

OT, but as it's my T to be O, I think that's OK?
