I hate sticky back plastic!!

My dh and I cover the books between us. We use the principle above. I pull the plastic back, and he uses a long ruler to smooth over the plastic to eliminate the bubbles.

That's how it's done in our house as well. Have spent many a romantic evening covering books!!
