Latin book recommendations please!

Post by Shaftsbury1 »

Hello Everyone,

I have never posted on this section of the forum, but i thought it was the best place to pick your experienced brains.

Ds started Gs this week and has had his first experience of latin. He is really worried about it and wants me to get him some books to help.

He hasn't yet been given a text book so i want to wait before i hit amazon, and i was hoping someone could give good recommendations.

I have experience of the Ecce Romani series,(which i loved). But i have found a vast array on the internet and am confused :? .I have to keep in mind that it has to be a an easy to follow and cool guide for ds.
Thanks in advance.

The text book will have all he needs, and 10 to 1 it will be the Cambridge Latin course. Resist the temptation to buy anything else; he will be fine and the school will be extremely well used to teaching it from scratch. Adding another book is likely to cause confusion rather than helping. My DD is now into her 4th year of Latin and DS started last week. Great opportunity!

Agree with Amber, DS had Cambridge Latin books for Y7 and Y8. He now has ' So you really want to learn Latin' by Nicholas Oulton (Y9) Publisher is Galore Park.

Thanks Amber for your feedback.

I was also thinking that he needs time to settle, but my worry is that he loses interest before he really begins!

I will take your advice and hope he starts enjoying his work.

What a great link Katel, thanks. :)
Though the link itself needs a tweak you can get to 'home' from it and then onward. DD will be pleased as she is struggling with a comprehensionum nastyum from book 3 at the moment.

Thanks for the link katel and stewie,

I had a go at a mini test and managed a decent 7/10! For a 20 odd year gap!

I had a great time with Latin at school, in fact I ended up doing A Level, and one of the best things I found was Asterix in Latin. Just a thought but it may make it a bit more fun for your DS.
