If you look on the ICAEW website on routes in you will see that they do mention that some employers will take you on at 18, and that you will probably take five years to qualify, rather than the three years that a graduate would take if they passed everything first time. But it still is possible for a non-graduate to qualify in three years - this is up to the employer. HMRC take on non-graduates to train as ACA, and so do some smaller firms. It is right that the big firms take on very few or no non-graduates ------- but certainly say 20 years ago if you looked at the background of many of the partners they had not done degrees.

I'm not sure you need a degree to get to the "top" - look at Peter Hargreaves.

I wonder if this scheme will not be available in London as a major incentive to employers will be paying on the job trainees an initial lower salary. Graduates in banking tend to only start off on £20k in London and it would be difficult to offer a substantially lower salary in this area. Added to the cost of training and qualifications it may end up costing companies more depending on where they are located, and as we know business mainly function for their own self interest. :?
