Me first heard this on Aussie soaps but then people here started saying it so me began to doubt I.

you'd never say, "he gave myself a present" - often makes it easier to strip out the "X and" bit to see what you would say in that situation.
My other pet hate is a "that" one. This stems from doing Latin, and "ut" - but frequently, without the that, the sentence doesn't make sense and you have to re-read it. I can't think of a single example now, naturally, but I will, I will.
And another Latin-led one is the ablative absolute. So often wrong - and here I CAN think of an example, whoopy-dee
"Being top of her class, the master gave her a certificate."
NO!! Either, "Because she was top of her class, the master ..."
or "Being top of her class, she was given a certificate by the master."
Not a desperately exciting example but this is so often wrong and my inner pedant is sent snarling.

Out of curiosity, I asked my DS what the plural of 'roof' was, and he said 'rooves' (I asked him to spell it to confirm whether he meant roofs or rooves).
