I agree. When my DS hand-writes his homework, he seems to engage more into it.

A comment on the article.
The act of hand-writing involves the friction of the pen/pencil on paper; that sensation (in addition to the physical action of forming the words and numbers) is what helps the information "stick" better in our brain. This is the same reason why students who do "practice problems" on a chalkboard in class have a better chance of retaining the material than if it's done on a computer or "smartboard".

A couple of years ago DS1 was given an A1 flipchart by Father Xmas  , now I know why it works. :D It turns the student into the teacher, the presenter, so the content sticks in the brain. I invested in an A1 flipchart as I found mind maps were working but we needed more space, serendipity.

This is worrying - I really hope this is not the case, ie that kids learn better by handwriting rather than typing. My dd has been diagnosed with joint hypermobility and finds handwriting very tiring, so whenever possible she types. She has completed an online typing course for kids to improve her speed. She has long bendy fingers and toes, and can do all sorts of contortions with them!

The one she did was on the BBC website called Dance Mat typing, but the occupational therapist also recommended a few others, freetypinggame.net and typingmaster.com. She seemed to enjoy doing it, as she was happy that she had at last been given an alternative to writing.
