Legal question??

This is a bit of an odd one but I hope someone can advise?
Is is possible to find out if someone has a criminal conviction?
If it is possible how would you do this?
I work with someone that loves to stretch the truth
They often go on about their criminal past & I am convinced it's a big fib but I would love to know for sure.
Don't know who's worse him or me.

You could google his local newspaper with his name to see if anything comes up.
