Volcanoes
For those with an interest in geology (or the possibility of delayed flights ), Katla looks as though it has started rumbling overnight... well yesterday afternoon really. No smoke yet but sub glacial floods, harmonic tremors and earthquake swarms....
best place to learn all this is at Jon Frimann's blog - he even has a helicorder to record the rumble of the quakes..

Re: Volcanoes
Interesting - let's just hope nothing further happens in time for the summer hols. Last time DH had to inch his way back across Europe by trains, not planes & automobiles!

Saw the above story a few days ago. Are the volcanoes more active or just more in the public eye so make good news stories? The volcano, dubbed by Icelanders in the Middle Ages as the "Gateway to ****," is one of Iceland's most active, having erupted some 20 times over the past millennium, most recently on February 26, 2000.
Hekla, which is not far from Eyjafjoell and has gone off about once a decade over the past 50 years, is known for its extremely varied and hard-to-predict eruptions, with some lasting only a matter of days and others lasting months and even years.

Re: Volcanoes
could be chance of Grimsvotn, Hekla and Katla all erupting this year.. Eruption at Katla has caused major floods and brought down a bridge, however the harmonics are dropping and all may (or may not) go quiet.....
The chap who was pontificating on Hekla last week is a bit of a doom merchant and makes his name "predicting " eruptions - does it so often that occasionally he is right.
