Don't think there are any GS in Northampton??.

Northampton Girls High is an Indie.

Northampton boys use an aptitude and fair banding system:

Aptitude – 10% of places are awarded to boys with a demonstrated particular aptitude for
Music and/or Technology, approximately half in each specialism
3. The remaining 90% of places are allocated using a system of Norm Referenced Banding as
described in the DCSF guidance on banding. ALL applicants to the school will take the same
common ability test. The test will be used to place ALL applicants into five equal sized ability
bands. An equal number of applicants will be selected fairly from each band.

Thanks HM.
Does anyone know if you can apply from Northampton to grammar schools in nearby counties? A friend lives there and I said I would find out for her.

Thanks yoyo. I saw that but was a bit confused because I thought it was called Northamptonshire Grammar School, but now I see that it has just changed its name. Will let my friend know.

Ah, it's an indie. Never mind.

You can apply to Bucks GS but Northampton is too far on distance from Buckingham.

That's a shame! Mum works in a school - her DC would probably get in - but she is not 100% sure because of some of the behaviour she has witnessed. It does seem though that this is her only option. I think she's hoping that behaviour in the top sets will be better. Thanks for all your responses.

Northamptonshire has borders with Warwickshire to the west and Buckinghamshire to the south, but Northampton itself is quite a long way from the GSs in either county so even though it's possible to apply and sit the tests, getting a place could be difficult as distance is one of the main allocation criteria - for Bucks, at least. I would definitely recommend looking at Northampton School for Boys for boys living in Northampton as it has an excellent reputation (I suspect their special subjects are drama and time travel, their most famous alumnus being the current incumbent of a certain tardis! ). As mentioned in Herman's post, a few places are allocated on musical aptitude, so certainly well worth considering for a musically inclined boy - and there are also some places reserved for technological aptitude. Most places allocated randomly though, so a bit of pot luck is involved. Northampton School for Girls in Spinney Hill has excellent facilities for music and drama but I don't really know what it is like academically. (Not to be confused with Northampton High School for Girls which is an indie.)

In Gloucestershire we have no catchment areas and 7 superselective grammars. From what I have seen, children sit the tests from all over the country (and beyond, I gather ); with some parents saying they will move if their child is successful. Others, however, get bussed in from well outside the county, and while it is very hard for me to type this without launching into my own views on this practice, it is apparently only 1 hour and 42 minutes from Northampton to Cheltenham....

From anecdotal evidence of pupils travelling into Birmingham GS, some parents would consider 1 hour 42 mins a perfectly acceptable commute for their DCs (although maybe not for themselves)
