Re: How do YOU pronounce .......
At the age of about 7, I asked DS what he would do if he lost us on the tube expecting the 'find a person in a uniform' response that had been drummed into him since birth! With confidence he replied that he'd get on a tube to Marylebone and then Chiltern Rail back to Warwick!kittymum wrote:Although I'm relaxing slightly as they get older arrival at Marylebone is normally greeted by me announcing "I am going to look after ALL the travel cards, please stay where I can see you and don't run off and if anyone needs the loo we have to go now!"
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

Not a place name ( but includes one ) but I've just had my attention drawn by a friend to an ad on FB that she has seen.

I think I say Shrewsbury and Shrowsbury! And I always want to put an extra syllable in Towcester (but don't).
Was in Meltham this weekend though, and went through Slaithwaite, so I know those two They say Marleybone on the Tube, but my parents always said Marrylebone so I do too.

Fokestun, but Maid Stonesouthbucks3 wrote:I went to a conference in America with delegates from all over. The delegates from the Good old southern states begged me to educate the masses on pronunciation. Particularly Suffolk, which Americans in general pronounce suf foke (as in people).
But then we say folkstone... as foke stone....not forkstun ...there is no rhyme or reason.

It's nearly midnight and I just thought of a real stinker:
Belvoir...beaver
Why oh why do we change "beautiful view" to an oversized water rat? Bonkers!
Have now bought "mother tongue" by Bill Bryson to read when my eyes are unglued from conjunctivitis again...this forum costs me a fortune. I had looked at it before, but now bitten the bullet, I know dh will like it too.
