I have happy memories of getting a holiday for St Peter's day at primary school. Lots of churches having special celebrations and a lovely sunny day here :D

Often a popular day for ordinations and hence nice anniversary celebrations

We never got Petertide off school but did have ascension and corpus christi.

DD never got St Peter's day off at primary, though they did have a St. Peter's day service.

I went to a St Michaels school and we had a service (the church was quite a walk away too) but no day off.

Just found this about Petertide on Wikipedia. Hopefully this element of the celebration has disappeared now (although I can think of one or two of my neighbours I could nominate. Shame I don't live in Cornwall :D ).

"Around Penzance in west Cornwall, the period has long been celebrated by Midsummer bonfires and sometimes the burning of effigies of unpopular residents."
