Does anyone know if there is an equivalent to the NUS student discount card that is available for primary school students? I can see that she can apply for one when she goes to secondary school but that is nine months away and I could do with the savings now. (We are having to buy ladies clothes and shoes as the kids ranges don't fit her any more)!

Oh I could do with knowing about one for secondary school as DS has to have adults clothes just to get the leg length and then a belt to hold them up, tiny waist which I wish I had.

I've got a student card which gives discounts at many places, usually 10%, but it tends to be restaurants etc rather than the kinds of shops one might buy school uniform at. Some of the trendier shops aimed at the youth market offer a discount, which obviously suits me as I like to dress 30 years younger than I really am and one or two shoe shops which I suppose might help, but your Marks and Spencers etc don't seem keen to attract the student market in my experience.

We have been looking into getting PS student edition for my daughter to edit photos. Nearly half price for the student edition, however she needs proof she is a student. Apparently a photo of a student card with photo will do but secondary schools don't provide them as far as I know. The alternative is to send a copy of a school report with a photo Id of some kind (passport I guess).
However this all turned out to be immaterial as you also need to be 13, and she won't be until July. Weirdly Adobe say the student edition is available to eligible students as primary, secondary and sixth form schools as well as colleges. Interested to see how many primary schools have 13 yo in.

DD is also in women's clothes (taller than me now) and has passed the VAT threshold for shoes (5.5 for girls/women's) so would love to know the answer to this too.

I wonder if we have found a gap in the (loyalty) market? Either that or a lobby group for children's clothes to be re-sized to be more realistic - I resent paying VAT for clothes for a ten year old!

The National Union of Students have a card that you pay for:

That card gives discounts on Amazon (which would help with past papers, books, stationery etc) and New Look (that would help with clothes) but students need to be at secondary school and the school must be registered with them. I'm not sure if it would help with your photography question Tinkers but might be worth asking? While we are on photography, do you know of a course that I could go to with my 10yo? She has inherited a camera and would like to know more about taking photos and everything I have found is for older kids alone.

Just tried to get a NUS card for DD, her school is listed so that was ok, but unfortunately you need to be 14. Useful to know though.

I think you are right, Definite gap in the market there. What really annoys me was that I have to pay VAT on her school tracky bottoms, when they are obviously school wear (have the school crest on them) because they are deemed to be a woman's size. We don't pay vat on the school sweatshirts regardless of size.

Have been looking for photography courses myself for DD. Similar position, got her dad's DSLR when he upgraded. I think the best thing is to go out taking photos and see what works and what doesn't. Encourage her to see things from a different angle, something younger children seem to do anyway.

Hello all, I'm still searching. NUS state you have to be at least 16 to apply for a student discount card now. Ho hum.

Has she tried signing up for unidays? Gives discounts across the board and it will check if her institution (aka school) is recognised. My sons both had it some time ago.

I wondered about Unidays (having eventually remembered the name ), as DD's friend has a card. However, according to the Ts and Cs:

The UNiDAYS service is not intended for individuals under the age of 16 years old. If you are under 16 years of age, you are not permitted to use the UNiDAYS service. By using the service, you confirm that you are at least 16 years of age. If you are 16 to 17 years of age, you may only sign up to the UNiDAYS service with the consent of a parent or legal guardian.

Unless I was looking at the wrong website and they have a different card for younger students? (DD and her friend are 16 anyway).

Oh I had no idea about that. Mine were certainly using it below 16 but none of us has a card, we just use it online. I don't think anyone here read the small print. Sorry.

I do find it annoying though. My son is 16 now which means suddenly we have to buy a railcard instead of getting automatic discounts, similar thing at the swimming pool and in other scenarios. I don't really know why when the school leaving age is now 18 you don't get discounts under that age automatically.

I also think that 17 year olds in the upper sixth ought to be allowed into clubs with their mates. There is a whole industry in fake IDs for those whose birthday falls in the last part of the school year. I think if they are with people in the same school year there ought to be some leeway.
