Presumably he can take a break from it and start up again if he wants to?
I see the point about encouraging but actually that might, however carefully it is done, make him feel a failure if he doesn't want to. Not because that's your intention but he may pick up that is what you really want.

If he enjoys performing in ensembles then he is getting pleasure from his music that way so is able enjoy his musical gifts.

Having had DCs of different tendencies at different things at different things and learned lessons from getting my encouragement/ support levels wrong as often as not I'd go with taking a back seat for a bit on this one.

The only time I'd be a little 'pushy' is if they make a commitment and then want to pullout, especially if it impacts others but that doesn't seem to be the case here.

There is a local story of a child who had no interest in performing at primary school but by secondary age was stunningly good and has made a career from it.
