This echoes a post made by someone (sorry forgotten who it was) before about the increasing importance of GCSE and A level results to potential employers:

I didn't read the whole article but I assume they are using it in conjunction with the degree because it is not easy to tell what uni offers the more rigorous degree. In some ways it is quite fair as those missing out on Oxbridge each year are probably as capable as those who got in. In saying that a friend of mine refuses to interview anyone that doesn't have a degree and when OH is interviewing he is not interested in A'level results but the degree. Afterall, it is very easy to mess up between the ages of 16-18 and one shouldn't be blighted for life because of this short period when one was very young, immature and potentially had limited academic guidance.

This has been going on for a long time...I used to get really peeved when potential employers picked up on my D grade in German whilst completely ignoring my 2:1 in the subject as part of a joint honours degree. In the end I started leaving my A-level grades off my CV and only supplied the information if asked (a shame as the other two were much better! )
