Does he start neat and then get worse as he fatigues? and, random question, did he crawl or bum-suffle as a child. Weight bearing through the upper limbs when crawling is key to developing shoulder girdle stability, in turn very important for handwriting. Does he struggle with other fine or gross motor tasks? could be worth checking for dyspraxia.
