Elder son is now in year 10, and struggling to balance the demands of more important less urgent course work with the less important more urgent regular homework. The homework planner works well for monitoring homework, but doesn't help with coursework which is always a bigger project and needs working on for a longer period of time.

Anyone got any practical solutions/ planning systems that have worked for their children and which THEY have welcomed! Child recognises that he needs to control of his own time management but is floundering....

Many department hand out coursework time schedules which break down the task and the teachers sign every few weeks to say work is up-to-date. Also school hands out coursework deadlines which are co-ordinated so they don't clash ...

If you don't have any of that get your child to do their own plan and split the work up into small 'bite-sized' chunks.
