I was given some lovely homemade cards when I started teaching in Inner London. The families were often poor but felt the need to give something.

I still have them along with a poem that one class wrote with all of their nicknames and a line about each one of them and several about me!

My dh teaches in a secondary school. He gets a lot of bottles of wine after A level results come out and occasionally one after GCSE results but nothing the rest of the time (and wouldn't expect it). My dd (year 7) has written a christmas card for her form tutor but nothing else...

Teachers never expect gifts from pupils - but I have always been genuinely touched that so many pupils and families want to say thank you.

I am not allowed to accept gifts from pupils in my current job - which I think is a bit sad. Some of the pupils bring me cakes they have baked and I been given other small / handmade gifts which I would never refuse - there is a lot of pleasure in giving.
