Does anyone understand why the answer is c?

I think this has been answered before but can't find it just at the moment!

My explanation is as follows, but am willing to be challenged!

Every pattern must have at least one circle and any "C" shapes must have the open side facing inwards - that eliminates
a - open sides of "c"s facing outwards
b - no circles
d - open sides of "c"s facing outwards
e - open sides of "c"s facing outwards
