HELP with 11+ techniques & Practice

I have a son who will be sitting the 11+ exams in Sept08 @ slough grammar. I desparately need help in teaching him. I have bought the bond assessment papers in (how to do series) NVR, VR & Maths. But this is not helping too much as I need to sit with him all the time to get him to understand the techniques. He has the potential to do the work but easily looses interest & as a result gives up. I have also purchased the NFER Neslon 11+ practice papers but I do not want him to do these until he has the understanding of doing the tests. I desparately need advise on any books available that would help him with the techniques in all 3 subjects. Also, if anyone is from the middlesex area, do they know any tutors who specialise in grammar school tuition. Thanks for your help.

have you looked in the Book Shop section on this site?
There are some good 'how to' books on vr and nvr.
Then cds are also good value and, as it saves the answers, you can see how he is progressing and target the areas he has difficulties with. There are also some excellent games etc on teh web. a few miutes googoling turns up some brilliant stuff!
Check what type of vr questions are asked in your area as some (eg kent) only use 15 types, some of teh books show 50 types.
As for losing interest I would say little and often and treat the VR and NVR as puzzles.
If all else fails bribery canbe very useful........

Suggest take a step back and break the work down into smaller chunks. Photocopy papers and give one section at a time. Learn one technique ( try IPS how to VR book ) and then use the CD or download from this site to whizz through fifty same type questions, doing it on the PC makes it fun again and should encourage independent working.
For a "tutor" try one of the general tutor agencies ( do a web search ) they often use university students who may have sat similar exams a few years ago, it is expensive and you need to do the quality control and project manage, but it worked for us.
We were all "desperate" once.
So keep trying, if you hit a wall have a short break.
